from hedges to topiary: shaping your garden

Topiary is the ancient art of trimming and training hedges or vines to grow into desired shapes. Many contemporary gardeners are using this technique to create distinctive styles and structures to add character and charm to their outdoor environment. But you don’t have to be a professional landscaper to try your hand at topiary. You can start out quite modestly, simply by creating a wire frame (e.g.a heart shape) for a potted vine to climb. It is this very same basic principal that applies to the larger scale animal shapes which are becoming popular on some well-manicured estates.

First, consult a horticulture society or a reputable garden center for tips on the right plants for your project, taking into account the vine or bush’s density, color, texture, growth rate and trim requirements. Look into the different supplies and guidance resources (e.g. library or internet) to find how to make or find the best, most attractive topiary frames.

Then pick a plant that can thrive under the conditions you will provide, taking into account the temperature range, sunlight and moisture (both natural and supplied) as well as drainage.Next, make sure you will be encouraging your plant to grow in its natural manner. For example, don’t try to keep a climber low to the ground or expect ground cover to climb. If you are careful about the plant you choose, you could soon be rewarded with an eye-catching example of one of the newest – and most traditional – garden hobbies of all time.
