Vacuum cleaners – what’s the big deal?

If you haven’t thought much about your vacuum cleaner lately, you might be surprised to know that it could be the cause of allergy problems. Modern portable units and built0in systems have become more sophisticated in recent years as more and more  families are expressing concern over the air quality in their homes. Vacuum cleaning can help a great deal if the equipment is effective, so it’s good to know how to measure a vacuum cleaner’s performance before you buy it.

Cleaning power

While motorized vacuum-heads loosen carpet dirt for a more through cleaning job, the vacuum’s main motor power is much more important because it creates the suction. However, vacuum suction can be severely affected by the size of the vacuum head opening, the integrity of the hose or piping, and the distance from the vacuum head top the motor. So, instead of just comparing motor sizes, look for performance measurements in “Air Watts” which indicate the volume of air flow (measured in cubic fee per minute) multiplied by suction or simulated “water lift” capability (measured in Pascals).

Air filtration and maintenance

Be sure to ask for verifiable filtration standards. The most widely acknowledged filter or dust bag standard, known as HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air), is a key indicator of the ability to contain annoying allergens like dust mites and mold spores. In addition, the carpet industry has its own “Green Label” measurement of soil removal, dust containment, and carpet appearance retention.
